The $1.81 million coversion of Bowlers Lane to a bitumen road will improve freight connections near the airport and the proposed Tamworth Regional Freight Intermodal, Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson said.

TRC Mayor Col Murray said the upgrade would mean trucks would have an easier access to the "major industrial and food processing areas in Tamworth" near Glen Artney.

Mr Anderson said the Tamworth council has a good reputation for road construction in government, which makes it easier to win support for state funding.

"One of the things I like to do is push Transport for NSW and push the the Transport and Roads Minister, particularly Paul Toole our Regional Roads Minister to get the funding into our region," he said.

"We saw another just over $3 million for some work up the top of Kingstown near Bendemeer.

"Because I know and the Minister knows that we get the work done, we do it right and Tamworth Regional Council have a very good reputation when it comes to road infrastructure."

Asked about the proposed Intermodal Project, which was plagued by delays but started construction in May, he said the project was making good progress.

The road is expected to be open for traffic by early August and ready for accreditation for heavy vehicles like B-doubles by Christmas.
