The Leader understands Qantas does not yet have the details on which areas of its business will bear the brunt of the cuts.
A full breakdown of the job losses is expected in the coming weeks, while the company continues to adapt to restrictions implemented due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Qantas says its air services are currently operating at 15 per cent across the country, but it hopes to increase its services as restrictions ease.
New England MP Barnaby Joyce said he would do all he could to protect Qantas jobs in the region.
"What Qantas is doing isn't willful or malicious it's unfortunate by reason of the circumstances they've been placed in by the pandemic, so while it is startling it is understandable," Mr Joyce said.
"I'm hoping, if anything, it is for the short term and that's why I'm advocating to get the economy up and running again.
"We haven't heard anything yet about how it might impact our region, but I will be doing what I can to make sure we look after people in our area."
The uncertainty comes as Virgin was purchased to Bain Capital on Friday.
Bain says it is determined to return the airline to offering Australians access to competitive, viable aviation services for the long term.
