Since an extended list of 29 water-saving rebates was announced by Tamworth Regional Council (TRC) in February this year, locals have been saving bucket loads - of cash and water.

In total, 231 rebates for both residential and commercial water users had been approved at a cost of just less than $37,000.

Ceiling fans, dual flush toilets and the maintenance of evaporative air conditioners were popular purchases.

Tamworth Plumbing manager Kevin Marsden said it was the installation of rainwater tanks that has been keeping him busy.

"Rainwater tanks are definitely going gangbusters right now," he said.

"I think it's got a lot to do with the fact that it's actually raining now, and people are keen to buy them."

Mr Marsden said his business has been installing more rainwater tanks than usual in the past couple of months, and has been fielding an abundance of enquiries as well.

"I'm not sure the rebates have as much to do with it as the rain ... but it certainly helps, it's an incentive to get it done."

He said people often underestimate the cost of installing a tank, and the cash from council helps to cover additional extras.

Locals have claimed a total of 36 water tanks through the rebates since February, ranging from small to medium to large, and some were stand-alone.

Council statistics show 59 of the rebates were for the maintenance of evaporative air conditioning, 47 were for ceiling fans and 34 were for dual flush toilets.

Mr Marsden said it's no surprise dual flush toilets are near the top of the list, because people upgrading their toilets have to buy one.

There were also 20 pool covers claimed and 15 showerheads, among products like waterblades and oxijets.
