The federal government will foot the bill for a charter apron upgrade and new airside LED lighting to bring the airport inline with Civil Aviation Safety Authority guidelines.
It's welcome news for airport businesses, Tamworth Regional Council acting mayor Phil Betts said.
"The airline industry has suffered a huge hit as a result of COVID-19 and we need to get it back on board with the safety aspects," he said.
"So the community can be assured all the safety and efficiencies are there."

Member for New England Barnaby Joyce said the upgrades would boost regional travel.
"Air travel has taken a back seat during this COVID-19 pandemic but make no mistake, regional travellers will return and they already are," he said.
"That's why we need critical infrastructure like this to support tourism in the New England as well as our emerging freight markets."
The funds include $5.8 million for Tamworth, Scone, Armidale and Inverell airports.
