WaterNSW confirmed flows down the Peel River would continue in their current form until the approval process for the Chaffey Dam pipeline is complete.

Mr Anderson said his advice from Environment Minister Matt McKean and Water Minister Melinda Pavey was that the flows would be stopped until October.

"If they are not we need to find out why," he said.

"That was our intention, that was what I thought would happen, obviously the federal government hasn't signed off on it so let's get them to sign off."

Real time data on the WaterNSW website shows 9ML of water was released from Chaffey Dam in the last 24 hours.

In the last seven days 68.5ML has been released from the dam, that includes 30ML of environmental flows and the town water supply.

The 30ML of environmental flows is roughly the equivalent of 12 Olympic swimming pools surging down the Peel River each week.

Federal and state government approval has been sought to operate the Chaffey Dam pipeline, a WaterNSW spokesman said, that would negate flows down the Peel River.

"The last of these approvals, from the federal authority, is imminent," he said.

"River operations will continue in their current form, until the approval process is complete."

The environmental flows were confirmed by a spokeswoman for Water Minister Melinda Pavey, who argued Chaffey Dam has enough supply for Tamworth's drinking water and the minimum legal requirements WaterNSW has to provide for the environment.

She said the flows would continue "until the dam reaches 10 per cent."

"Kevin Anderson MP has fought for the pipeline which has ensured a safeguard for Tamworth's town water supply," she said.
