But a new initiative is set to spruce them up with haircuts, alleviating some of the self-esteem issues associated with returning to see your peers.
Haircut vouchers have been purchased by Tamworth Family Support Services Reconnect Program in Gunnedah, funded by the Department of Social Services.
Gunnedah Reconnect Program coordinator Sarah Harrison said the gesture will not only increase well-being of the youth in Gunnedah, but also help support local hairdressing business Rosa Leopardo Hair Design.
"Young people in our community are experiencing challenges of their own during COVID-19," Ms Harrison explained.

"Our aim is to increase young people's self-esteem as they return to school after the isolation.
"It's very rewarding, being able to make a difference to people's lives who are already facing challenges, to be able to brighten their day, and build their confidence to get back into school."

For hair-dresser Sophie Smyth, it's a win-win situation.
"It is fantastic," she said.
"I'm very appreciative of the support ... It'll be so good to put a smile on their faces, and uplift the vibe, considering everything they've been going through and struggling with recently."
