The single vehicle crash forced the closure of the Kamilaroi Highway at Emerald Hill, near Goolhi Road, about 4pm.
The 40-year-old woman was trapped in the wreckage of the car initially and had to be rescued by emergency services.
She suffered serious injuries and was treated on scene by ambulance paramedics.

The West Rescue Helicopter was also tasked from Tamworth to the scene to collect the woman.
The chopper's doctor and critical care paramedic assessed the patient at the scene before she was stabilised and flown to Tamworth hospital.
She was reported to be in a stable condition.
Investigations into the crash are continuing.
