In the past four days alone, staff have swabbed about 250 people per day, according to Hunter New England Health (HNEH) physician Dr David Durrheim.

Despite the massive increase in people presenting for testing, not a single new case of COVID-19 had been confirmed at the latest update on Monday afternoon.

It's a stark contrast to the four weeks leading up to the drive-through clinic's opening, at which point a total of about 500 Tamworth locals had been screened for the deadly virus.

However, Dr Durrheim said it shows only 3.6 per cent of the Tamworth community have been tested.

"It's a good start, it's an encouraging start ... but as we get a higher proportion of people tested, we'll feel much more confident there is no virus being missed in the community," he told the Leader on Monday.

"I think when we get to about 10 per cent of the community tested, and approaching that, we'd feel very comfortable that nothing's being missed."

While the Tamworth COVID-19 clinic is thriving, Armidale has some catching up to do.

About 330 people used the Armidale screening service last week, though it was closed over the weekend.

Dr Durrheim said he hopes to see those numbers pick up this week after swabbing started again on Monday.

According to HNEH, about 3.1 per cent of the Armidale population has been tested.

Despite the staggering increase in local testing and no new cases, Dr Durrheim said Tamworth locals need to "keep our guard up" as people begin to move about more.

"Even though Tamworth, at the moment, might be virus free - and we're hoping to confirm that this week - people will come and visit Tamworth from places where we believe the virus is still circulating," he said.

"The last thing we want is another wave, similar to the one we had in March, which really frightened all of us."

NSW Health data to 8pm on Sunday showed a total of 1978 Tamworth residents had been screened for the virus since the pandemic started.

The HNEH district is still stable at 277 confirmed cases, and only one new coronavirus case was confirmed across the entire state in the latest update.
