Wind gusts of up to 61 km/h were recorded in the day in Tamworth amid afternoon storms, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM).
Temperatures dropped to just 10.8 in the afternoon, with an apparent temperature of just 7.5 degrees.
By 6pm, 20mm of rain has fallen in the city since 9am at the Tamworth airport.
It's been a windy day in the New England as well, with residents of Armidale and Glen Innes feeling apparent temperatures of 1.1 and 3.2 degrees, factoring in wind chill.
Gunnedah also saw blustery weather, recording 10.4mm of rain with winds of up to 37 km/h.
But Thursday's milder temperatures are set to continue to fall to create what could be a record chilly weekend.
A massive antarctic low pressure system pushing from the south could see temperatures in the low single digits in Tamworth.
Meanwhile, the New England highlands will likely be outright frozen, with the BoM predicting Armidale is in for negative temperatures on Sunday morning.
Tamworth will reach just 13 on Saturday and 16 on Sunday, with lows of 1 and 3 degrees.
April is the region's driest month. Last year Tamworth did not receive a drop of rain for the entire month. In 2020 it has received more than 50mm even before Thursday, that's double the average.
