North Tamworth residents Tash Dawson and Nadine Sheridan work together in the communication centre for NSW Police and know about isolation due to the nature of their work.
The distance and a social media meme prompted the duo to have a little fun by competing to see who could put their bins out in the funniest costume.
"We're both shift workers and know how hard it can be to be cooped up for long periods of time," Mrs Dawson told the Leader.
"At the moment, we are still considered essential workers and taking our bins out is one of the few times a week we get to see each other.
"After we saw the meme online, we thought why not give it a go and give people something to laugh and feel good about."
Mrs Dawson said she was hopeful the trend would catch on and more of her neighbours would join in the fun.
"These are very uncertain times and we know there isn't too much to laugh about," she said.
"However, this is a bit of harmless fun to help people keep their spirits up.
"We have a saying at work, if you didn't laugh you'd cry, so it is really important for everyone to have a laugh during times like these."
Mrs Dawson said she was hopeful the duo's actions would inspire others to look out for their neighbours.
"It costs nothing to be kind," she said.
"We all need to stick together and things like this keeps you sane."
