Walcha resident Jen Kealey says she was cold-called by a man last week purporting to be from a reputable solar power company offering to inspect her property to assess its suitability for a government rebate. Ms Kealey subsequently contacted the company the man named, and they confirmed they had no representatives in the Walcha area. The incident has been reported to both local police and the ACCC.
"There is a youngish man of Indian continental descent in town offering to do property inspections for solar and offering to sign you up for government rebates which I suspect he will then receive and never pass on or install solar," Ms Kealey said on her Facebook page yesterday.
"I have registered the scam with ACCC and notified the local police as he was actually in Walcha today. Share and speak to people so that no-one gets caught. If someone thinks they have already been scammed ring the local police and report at Scamwatch."
Ms Kealey also spoke with the Walcha News and said the caller made an appointment to come out and see her at home and it was only when he was late for the meeting that she called the company to enquire where he was.
"I had looked at the website of the company he said he was from and it all looked legitimate," she said. "He was very good at sounding professional."

However, Ms Kealey said she declined to give the man her company name or ABN over the phone saying she would do so after his visit when it was confirmed it was something she was interested in.
"I'm certainly glad I did that," she said.
If you have any information about this man or have been contacted then let Walcha Police know or contact Scamwatch.
