Department for Environment and Water Conservation and Wildlife director Lisien Loan says the three-day workshop will identify short- and long-term strategies for Kangaroo Island's unique and threatened wildlife in the move from emergency response to recovery.

"It will be the first time that the national scientific community has met with conservation managers on Kangaroo Island to discuss in detail the impact of the recent fires on wildlife, including our threatened and endemic species, so it is a significant event," she said.

Bushfires in December and January caused major damage across the island, blackening more than 200,000 hectares, including most of the famed Flinders Chase National Park.

The loss of habitat has raised concerns for a number of species including glossy black cockatoos, dunnarts, echidnas, pygmy possums and bandicoots.

Thousands of the island's koalas were also killed.

The workshop, to run from Tuesday to Thursday, will look at the impact of the fires on native animals and review the emergency response.

It will also identify opportunities for partnerships with the community, research institutions, industry, government and the philanthropic sector.
