POLICE are appealing for witnesses after ATMs in the main street of a New England town were vandalised in an attempted theft in the early hours of Thursday.

At 4.30am, a man smashed the front screen and pulled out the electronic components of the Commonwealth Bank ATM outside Kirk's IGA in Guyra.
He then did the same to the Regional Australia Bank ATM.
Police said, fortunately, the offender was not able to gain entry to either ATM, and no money was taken.

Police are following a number of leads in their investigation and have spoken to witnesses. They've also watched CCTV footage from both the crime scenes.
No arrest has been made yet, but the police say they have a description of the offender.
