The country artist has just released her single Green Light, that will appear on her new album which is not too far from done.
"In country I've never felt that I had to stick with a specific sound, if I want to write a bluesy song with a harmonica solo I will," Rae said.
"It's still very story and lyric-driven because that's what I love but the sounds on the new album are more sparse, there are some new sounds we were playing around with.
"We tried popcorn being thrown around a room, we wanted to have fun - that's my New Year's resolution because I have the most fun job and you can forget that when you overthink things."

That's the crux of Green Light, to quiet Rae's internal monologue and run towards her challenges and goals.
It's produced by Joe Delahoyde and was recorded in both Sydney and Nashville.
In the meantime Rae has been busy working on a new live show that she plans to debut at CMC Rocks in Queensland in March.
The young artist performed at Tamworth Country Music Festival's Stars Under the Stars concert in the park. "It's a nice way to start the year every year," she said.
"You bookend your year, I started recording this new album in Tamworth last January.
