Malo the animal-assisted therapy dog began at Quirindi High School last week, and she'll be making a regular appearance there this year.

The eight-year-old labrador-border collie cross will be working with school counsellor Linda Berthon, for the benefit of the students and staff.

Malo's name is Tongan for "thanks" and Ms Berthon said the therapy dog was "amazing at helping young people identify and regulate their emotions".

"She just loves kids; she can read emotions and will instantly go to those who she senses need extra support," she said.

Ms Berthon is a psychologist who has worked with Malo at other schools in and out of the region.

She will be at the school three days per week, but Malo will wag some of those days - so to speak.

This will not only give her a break but also allow students and staff with a dog phobia or allergy to meet with just Ms Berthon.

"Everyone has struggles and, if they are supported through their struggles, they can build resilience," she said.

"There is a lot that can be done to do support long-term mental health through early intervention."

She said high school was such a key developmental stage.

"Students may be facing big issues in school or at home, they may be working through their identity and future career goals ... and we are grateful to be here to assist."

When they're not at the high school, the human-canine team will be at Quirindi Public School.
