One of these will be a huge tidal wave of Aussie mateship that cried out "what can we do to help our farmers?"
The responses have been enormous and often inventive. When Sydney radio station Hope 103.2 asked, "What do drought ravaged families really need?" The answer came back, "Give the kids a break, an unforgettable away-from-it-all experience, a chance for kids who have shared the load and the pain to get away and just be kids for awhile. "
So, partnering with Scripture Union, they formed the Kids to Camp project and took it to the airwaves. The response was staggering. The Sydney listening audience gave enough to send over 100 kids to a Scripture Union camp.
Last December they did it again this time there was enough to send 530 kids to an SU camp.
Scripture Union camps are a growing phenomenon in NSW and it's not hard to see why. Take a child on an action packed holiday with new friends, new experiences, fascinating leaders and it's like a taste of heaven.
There are SU camps for cycling, computers, agriculture, music, even a zookeepers camp.
Here in Tamworth, we've just had Chaffey Watersports Camp with 250 campers and leaders, followed by Outback Adventure Camp at Pindarri near Inverell.
Later this year will bring on local camps in cricket, rugby league, rugby union, creation care, and sewing. Each camp is built around one major activity with a variety of fun events thrown in.
But what makes SU camps life changing is the experience of living in Christian community. It's a place where people live together in harmony and respect and everyone feels safe and significant.
