However, the council has moved fast to get the message out to the community with signage erected warning of the impending changes.
The move is in line with Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) recommendations for "high pedestrian activity zones".
It is the final stage of works for the zone, previous works included the new medians, line markings, new pedestrian crossings and lighting, and kerb blisters throughout the CBD.
The changes were first floated in 2016 when the council was asked to vote on the pedestrian safety measures.
The associated infrastructure came with a $600,000 price tag.
The project had 95 separate items installed in the CBD overhaul and it was jointly funded by the council and RMS.
The council's staff said at the time the overhaul wouldn't lead to traffic congestion in the city's CBD.
Changing speed limits are coming to:
Darling Street, Bourke Street, Fitzroy Street, White Street, Hill Street, Roderick Street, Peel Street, Kable Avenue, Dowe Street, Treloar Lane, Byrnes Avenue, Flyde Lane, and Smith Place.
