Australia made it to the semi-finals after topping the pool in a winner takes all scenario with no quarter finals in Hamilton, after accounting for the USA 19-14.
But they fell in the semis to a rampant Canadian outfit who scored two late tries to take control of the game and were then unable to hold back a confident French outfit to miss out on a podium finish.
"I was impressed with the character of the Squad this weekend, but we were disappointed we couldn't finish the job in our last two matches," head coach John Manenti said.
