The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by Ambulance New South Wales to reports of an accident on the Gwydir Highway east of Inverell.
Staff of the helicopter were heard reports that the crash involved just a single vehicle.
Initial reports were that a female believed to be the sole occupant of the vehicle was ejected during the collision.
Upon arrival, paramedics commenced treatment of a 45-year-old female for multiple traumatic injuries.
Helicopter critical care medical team assisted with treatment and stabilisation of the patient before being flown direct to the Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The Gwydir Highway has reopened at Elsmore following a two car crash.
The highway had been closed to allow a medical helicopter to land.
All emergency services and council crews have left the site of the crash.
The condition of those involved in the crash is still not known at this point.
There are no delays to traffic in the area.
EARLIER
The Gwydir Highway is closed in both directions East of Inverell due to a two-car crash.
Emergency services are at the scene of the crash, at Elsmore, while a medical helicopter and council crews are also attending.
Motorists should also avoid the area or delay travel on the highway until the road reopens.
The condition of those involved in the crash is not known at this point.

Heavy vehicles are able to pass under caution and should follow directions of emergency services.
