The extent of the groundwater contamination is still unknown and Tamworth Regional Council is still carrying out tests.
The council's acting manager of compliance, Brendan Woods, said petrol was present in a number of bores but it appeared to be limited to a small area.

"Water testing is ongoing and we have advised residents in the area to stop using bore water in an effort to prevent spread of the contamination," he said.
"Bore water should never be used for drinking but we have now asked Duri residents to not use their bore at all - even for stock or their garden."
The council is making "alternate arrangements" to provide water to stock on those affected properties.
Mr Woods said two underground fuel storage tanks were the likely source of the contamination.
The tanks were emptied on January 3.
Further analysis of water samples is ongoing to determine the extent and degree of contamination.
Council staff visited all properties in the Duri village to give residents information.
Residents were also asked to complete a short survey about their water use.
Any resident who did not receive a visit or information should get in touch with the council at 6767 5555.
Tamworth Regional Council is continuing to work with the Environmental Protection Authority and NSW Health to manage and investigate the extent of the fuel leak.
