A Strike Force has been established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the discovery of a 39-year-old woman's body in Lightning Ridge.

The woman's body was found near Black Prince Drive about 8am last Thursday.
Strike Force Bullarook was formed to investigate the death, a NSW Police spokesperson confirmed on Sunday.

While she was not a Lightning Ridge resident, the spokesperson said the woman came "from the region" and had been formally identified.
A post-mortem will be carried out to determine the cause of the woman's death.
Specialist forensic officers and police have been in Lightning Ridge investigating the crime scene.
A Lightning Ridge resident who wished to remain anonymous said the shock discovery had left many community members feeling "disturbed and dismayed".
The spokesperson said no further details could be shared.
