CREWS have been able to gain the upper hand fighting a fire near Coonabarabran this weekend.
The blaze broke out on Friday on Yearinan Station Road, Bugaldie and the Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warning for people in the area.
The RFS and National Parks and Wildlife crews were able to take advantage of milder conditions on Sunday to undertake backburning and strengthen containment lines.
Residents in the area could see increased levels of smoke as a result.
The Newell Highway between Coonabarabran and Narrabri was closed for a period of time, but has since reopened.
Dandry Road and Tothills Road remained closed along with other trails in Ukerbarley and Cooleburba state conservation areas.
The fire is still burning north east of Coonabarabran and has torn through more than 2000 hectares of land south of The Pilliga.
A small fire in The Pilliga also broke out over the weekend. On Sunday morning, it was listed as under control.
The fire - about 30 kilometres south of Narrabri - had grown to 167 hectares.
