The heat waves gripping large parts of Australia are also a potential impediment to the Tamworth gallops meeting going ahead.
Julie Maughan, chairwoman of the Tamworth Harness Racing Club, said Harness Racing NSW stewards cancelled the meeting at 10am on Thursday.
"We're trying to stick by the trainers as much as we can, to keep their racing program going, but Mother Nature takes over," she said.
The THRC also cancelled its trial on Tuesday this week, but will now hold a trial on Saturday from 10am.
Hunter and North West Racing Association chief steward Shane Cullen is monitoring the situation but has said this Monday's TAB meeting will go ahead at this stage.
"We are monitoring the air quality and have parameters, where once they are breached we won't race," he said.
Cullen was initially unaware the THRC had called off its meeting. But he said that if the TJC were to have held a meeting on Thursday, it would have gone ahead.
However, he said the Tamworth forecast of up to 43 degrees on Monday could put the seven-race meeting in danger of being cancelled. "We have a heat policy and will monitor that," he said.
TJC track manager Lindsay Bowne said the club had been watering the track and would continue to do so until Sunday.
"It's tough, the toughest I've ever seen," he said of the drought, the heat and the bushfire threats.
TJC general manager Mitch Shaw said: "Hopefully we'll be right, because we have great fields and some very strong races [planned for Monday]."
Racing NSW cancelled the Dubbo meeting planned for Saturday because of the forecast top on the day of 45 degrees.
