A Queensland man remains in a critical but stable condition in Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital, while a 23-year-old Armidale man suffered abdominal injuries in Friday's crash.
Police said the southbound Mitsubishi Verada collided head-on with the northbound Toyota Hilux on the highway, near Guyra, about 5.30pm.
New England Detective Inspector Ann Joy said the Mitsubishi came to rest on its roof, and trapped the 72-year man inside.

"Police are investigating which vehicle crossed to the incorrect side of the road," she said.
"We have got some statements from witnesses and the scene has been examined as part of the investigation, and blood samples have been taken from both drivers."
The older driver was taken by ambulance to Armidale hospital before being flown to Newcastle in a critical condition.
The crash shut the highway for some time.
On Monday, Detective Joy said the man's condition was critical but stable and investigators had not yet been able to speak with him.
Investigations are continuing.
