Fire and Rescue Boggabri attended the scene on the Kamilaroi Highway about 8am on Sunday after a passerby spotted the flames and raised the alarm at the fire station.
Captain Brian King was at the station and soon Gunnedah police, Fire and Rescue Gunnedah, Ambulance NSW and two Rural Fire Service trucks were on the way.
Mr King said the house was vacant at the time of the fire and the blaze originated from the kitchen.

He said crews were on the ground for about two hours and managed to save the house.
The cause is being investigated by Fire and Rescue NSW.
