Brown was unveiled as the new coach of the Australian team this week, instantly increasing the prospects of Ben Simmons' return to the national program.

The coach of the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA - where Simmons plays - Brown has yet to finalise his staff for their road to Tokyo.

And Weaver, who has been a Boomers assistant for the past six years and is the head coach of the NBL-leading Sydney Kings, is keen on staying on.

"There's never been anything more special to me than working with the Boomers," Weaver told AAP after confirmation of Andrej Lemanis' departure.

"A big part of that is because of what's been established by Matt Nielsen, Mark Bradtke and Brad Newley - he'd be hot if he was included with those old heads.

"But that's the truth. It's a special thing and has been for a long time. I'll always put my hand up to be part of the Boomers."

Weaver and Brown have plenty of history, with the former tasked with being the latter's video co-ordinator at the 76ers in 2013.

It was the start of a run of five consecutive losing seasons for the franchise, which eventually culminated in the drafting of stars Joel Embiid and Simmons.

The barren run was coined as 'The Process', a rebuilding of the culture under Brown, whose previous gigs included North Melbourne and the Kings in the NBL.

Weaver left Brown after three years, missing the 76ers transformation into an eastern conference powerhouse, but the pair have remained in contact since.

"I was his special team co-ordinator, that's what he'd call it - out-of-bounds and end-of-game stuff," Weaver said.

"So I spent more than my fair share of time in a dark room early in the morning with Brett Brown as he planned practice.

"I learned so much from him and wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him obviously. The impact he had on my career and my life is massive."

Weaver has the added benefit of coaching Boomers veteran Andrew Bogut, while the Kings this week added talented prospect Xavier Cooks.

The 24-year-old was originally part of the World Cup squad before suffering a pre-camp injury, and has now re-united with Weaver in Sydney.

"I'm excited to see where the Boomers program heads because it really is one of the most special teams with one of the most special cultures that I think exists in team sport anywhere," Weaver said.
