The 19-year-old man was confronted by three to four males, armed with knives, on Hillvue Road about 2.30am on Saturday.
Police said the offenders robbed the teenager of his wallet, cash and a mobile phone.
They then fled in a white ute. The teenager wasn't injured in the armed robbery but alerted police.
"The offenders were seen leaving in a white utility towards Duri Road, and we are appealing to the public for anyone that might have seen that white utility being driven in the South Tamworth area in the early hours of Saturday morning," Oxley Detective Acting Inspector Jason Darcy said.

Second suspicious housefire in street
Meanwhile, detectives are continuing to investigate a second suspicious housefire within a week.
The Green Street home in Coledale was engulfed in flames on Friday - exactly seven days after another home was destroyed by fire in the same street.
Police said both fires are suspicious and are investigating whether the two are linked.
"Obviously that is the second fire in a week in that street and that forms part of our investigations," Detective Darcy said.
"Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding that fire, and we are treating it as suspicious."
Two cars missing after break and enters
Meanwhile, police are still searching for two cars that are missing, after being stolen during break-ins in Tamworth last week.
Detective Darcy said police had information to suggest the cars were being hidden by thieves in the city.
A Toyota Rav4, bearing number plates DWD-82D, is believed to still be in the Tamworth area, while a white Subaru Forester, with DQA-65K registration, was still outstanding. It was stolen from a North Tamworth home during a break-and-enter on Saturday morning.
"Police are investigating several break and enters in the South Tamworth area, two of which still have these stolen cars outstanding," Detective Darcy said.
"Investigators want to remind community members to remove valuables from their cars and from out of sight; secure them, their cars and their homes; and don't leave their keys or garage door remotes in their cars.
"Police have seen incidents recently where offenders have gained access to homes through garage doors using the electric door remotes.
"We would urge community members to report suspicious activity, remain vigilant and secure their valuables."
Anyone with information is urged to call Tamworth police on 6768 2999.
