Caleb Russell Vogel has denied one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm of a teenage boy in Inverell, last December.
The senior constable appeared in Armidale Local Court this week, where his solicitor formally entered the not-guilty plea.
Magistrate Michael Holmes was told a number of witnesses would appear at the two-day hearing.

It's alleged the New England Police District senior constable assaulted the 14-year-old boy in Inverell two days after Christmas during an arrest in Evans Street.
Much of the detail of the alleged altercation has not been released by the police watchdog or tendered in court.
A solicitor from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Group Six unit, which handles cases in which police are charged with offences, will prosecute the case.
Mr Holmes set the case down for hearing in April 2020.
Vogel was first charged in August, after an investigation by the Professional Standards Command.
The investigation was launched after the incident was referred to senior New England police.
After the charge was laid, police said the officer was on leave and his duty status under review by NSW Police.
Vogel first appeared in Armidale court in October, but he was not required to enter a plea.
If found guilty after the hearing, Vogel faces a maximum penalty of five years' jail.
