Tamworth police were called to McCarthy Catholic College, off Tribe Street, on Monday, after reports surfaced on social media that a gun would be used to commit a crime at the school on Tuesday.
Police confirmed they had interviewed students at the school and investigations were continuing, but they did not believe there was any threat to student safety.
McCarthy principal Geoff McManus called police after the "very serious allegation" was reported to him, then sent a letter to parents and families of students.

"I immediately contacted the police who have interviewed a number of students in my office today.
"The police are very confident that the allegation was false.
"They have however emphasised the damaged caused by rumours and innuendo.
"They have affirmed and commended the students who reported the matter to the College immediately."
Mr McManus told families the students had been directed not to discuss the matter further, and counselling had been offered for any student who "feels concerned about this matter".
"Please understand the seriousness of this matter and that we have acted in partnership with the police to investigate and ensure the safety of students and staff at the college," he said.
Investigations are continuing.
