Oxley Detective Sergeant Jason Darcy said police were investigating if the incident was targeted.
"The fire was able to be extinguished quickly and no one was injured, but that was just sheer luck," he said.
"The risk that a Molotov cocktail poses - and the capacity to cause a large fire and put lives and property at risk - is huge, and especially in the current climate where there is a total fire ban and the conditions we see."
The homemade Molotov was thrown at the front of the house, sparking a small fire, in the dead of the night.
Detective Darcy said the fire caused minor damage to the home, but police were alerted.
"We are seeking information from the public, as well as any witnesses or local residents who might have CCTV in their homes, that could assist investigators," he said.
"We're particularly looking for anyone who saw anyone walking around the David Street area in South Tamworth overnight on Tuesday, and into the early hours of Wednesday morning, or any suspicious vehicles.
"If anyone noticed something untoward, or any vehicles that might have been circling the area or who passed a number of times, we would urge those community members to come forward to assist us with our investigation."
