An event for rural families looking for off-farm income, Namoi Unlimited's Find Your Feet Expo is in Gunnedah today after popping up in Nundle and Walcha Monday and Tuesday.

The expo has brought together groups such as government agencies, training providers and labour hire companies, talking about how and where people might be able to put their ag experience to good use.

One of them was Roads and Maritime Services; safety, environment and quality co-ordinator Tim Henderson saying he'd seen some promising potential applicants.

"I've spoken to a couple of young ladies - one in Walcha and one in Nundle - who came to see us about opportunities with regional maintenance, which is the operational arm of Roads and Maritime," Mr Henderson said.

"We actually have a target of 50 per cent females in the workplaces, so these young ladies looking for opportunities within our organisation are more than welcome."

He said applying for a government role could be "a daunting process" but it was a matter of finding examples to fit the position criteria.

One example was "demonstrate personal safety in the workplace" - the applicant could list using earmuffs when chainsawing or gloves when fencing, he said.

Paul and Dianne Miegel went to the Gunnedah expo to find out about work for one of their sons, who runs their beef cattle property north of town.

"[We want to] get him off the place to find something else," Mr Miegel said.

"Not to leave permanently - without him, we'd be buggered - but to do something else."

Mr Miegel said that, apart from the need to find another source of income, managing during the drought "gets to you" and "you've got to get away from ... the stress of the whole situation".

The expo also offered the chance to take a career course; or gain a white card or first aid certificate; more than 30 people attended one of the options.
