The British ace aims to race at the Olympics for the last time in Tokyo and then back up at the October Hawaiian Ironman world championships.

While German Jan Frodeno has won an Olympic gold medal and three Hawaii titles, no triathlete has come close to pulling off the double in the same year.

Brownlee made his Kona debut last month and was disappointed with 21st place.

But Brownlee is one of the most talented athletes in triathlon history and he is keeping his options open about next year's goals.

He will race at Busselton, south of Perth, on December 1 to secure early qualification for next year's Hawaiian Ironman.

"I still have aspirations to race the Olympics and if I race in Tokyo, it will definitely be my last Olympics," he said.

"But I also want to qualify for Kona next year and I hope to be able to do it in Busselton.

"Brownlee, 31, will be the biggest name to race at Ironman WA in the event's 15-year history.

He and younger brother Jonny have dominated short-course triathlon, with Jonny claiming silver behind Alistair at the Rio Olympics.

Alistair won the London Olympics gold medal and Jonny was third.
