The 2019 Australasian Firefighting Championships kicked off on Thursday and will run until Saturday down at the Gipps Street Fields.
While the athletic efforts of the firefighters caught the eye, it was the lush, green surface that's been the talk of the tournament.
"Everybody is going 'I can't believe how good it is'," Fire and Rescue NSW zone commander Tom Cooper said.
"It's not just good in a drought, it's the best they've ever seen.
"Tamworth should be proud of it."
Mr Cooper added: "Whoever the guy is [who prepared the surface], they should give him a pay rise."
Fire crews - which came from NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania - brought in their own water for the championships with the leftover to be used to top up RFS tanks locally.
Anyone wishing to check out the 2019 Australasian Firefighting Championships can head down to Gipps Street on Saturday to have a look.
Mr Cooper also thanked all the sponsors that had come on board and made the championships in Tamworth possible.
