On Sunday Isaac Farmilo scored a goal on debut for the Adelaide Fire, but it wasn't enough to spark them to their maiden Hockey One win with the Brisbane Blaze taking the points 5-1.
Farmilo struck in the final minute of the second quarter to make it 3-1 at half-time.
Meanwhile in Malaysia Workies team-mate Ehren Hazell slotted a double to lift the Australian under-21s to a 2-1 campaign opening win over Japan at the Sultan of Johor Cup.
Hazell put the Burras ahead in the third minute of the game. Japan equalised in the 15th minute but Hazell restored the Aussies' lead with an opportunistic strike in the 33rd minute.
The Aussies dominated the match and had at least two attempts come off the post.
"We were a bit unlucky but the three points are a welcome as Japan beat us in the opening match last year," Australian coach Ben Bishop said.
"We got together for the first time as a team last Monday and so overall it was a decent performance and outcome."
They then disappointingly drew 1-all with the hosts on Sunday.

Hazell's involvement with the Burras meant he was unavailable for the NSW Pride for their Hockey One match-up with the Tassie Tigers.
The Pride claimed the King of the Jungle title with both the men and the women's sides taking the points.
The men were the first to hit the pitch against a very physical and composed Tigers team lead by Kookaburra's captain Eddie Ockenden.
In their most challenging game of the competition so far, the NSW Pride had to battle some tough, wet conditions for their 4-2.
Blake Govers scored all four goals as they maintained top spot on the table.
At the other end of the spectrum the women's side featuring Tamworth products Kate Jenner and Alice Arnott registered their first win with a dominant 5-0 performance against an inexperienced Tigers team.
Abigail Wilson opened the scoring for the Pride in the 5th minute with a darting backstick goal. She then doubled the lead with a successful field goal conversion attempt.
Bettering Govers' haul in the previous game Wilson went on to score all five of the Pride's goals.
