Crews will continue to work on the fire today in an effort to fully contain it.

Mayor Peter Petty said while 170 hectares of land was burnt out and several landholders had close calls, he hasn't been informed of any structural losses apart from fences.

Meanwhile the fire burning in the Drake and Ewingar area is over 78,200 hectares in size and remains out of control.

The RFS has said it expects to identify containment lines today and, of course, protect homes where required.

The Clarence Way remains closed and is expected to remain so for some time.

Yesterday afternoon fire activity increased on the south eastern side of the Long Gully Road fireground in the areas of Ewingar and Broadwater Flat.

The fire crossed the Clarence River and burnt in an easterly direction through the Keybarbin State Forest and Mount Belmore State Forest, towards Coongbar and Wyan Creek.

"The conditions are much easier today but we're in this cycle of bad weather, we get some easing days and then we're back into it," RFS Deputy Commissioner Rob Rogers told the Seven Network.

"We've already lost 44 homes up until these fires, and if we've lost that (30) number more, it's going to be a really bad fire season."

The tiny crumb of comfort is that rain is expected across northern NSW on Friday.
