The new skate park has been a full-blown hit since opening, but Tamworth parkour instructor Jai Coyle saw an opportunity to put the city on the map as a hub for the burgeoning sport.
On the back of the raging success of shows like Ninja Warrior and the inclusion of sport climbing in the 2020 Olympics, the time was now, Mr Coyle said.
"The demand for parkour and Ninja Warrior has been growing and growing," he said.
"So many younger kids want to get into it and the want to learn, but there is no facilities in Tamworth, the closest are in Sydney.
"It would be the only regional town with something like that."
Classes in Tamworth are currently run at the regional playground on Kable Avenue.
While parkour is about efficiently traversing urban environment, and there are some good places currently in town, people need safe areas to learn, Mr Coyle said.
"Having our own space where we could learn, would be a lot easier," he said.
If a obstacle course couldn't be added to Viaduct Park, he suggested the old skate-park near the PCYC could also be a suitable location.
The council has suggested turning the old facility into "long vehicle parking area", however no decisions have been made on the site's future.
