The Tamworth Legacy Diggers Cup is set to return to Tamworth City Bowling Club after a 42-year hiatus after the prestigious trophy was found at a local recycling centre.
Tamworth Legacy president Greg Roese said it was thought to be lost forever, until recently discovered at Tamworth Regional Council's waste management site.
"We were fortunate that the person who discovered it realised its worth to us and passed it onto one of our former Legatees, Geoff Carthew," Roese told the Leader.
"However, the trophy was a little bit worse for wear and needed a new base added to it. But thanks to the hard work of Legatees, the trophy has been restored."

Teams of four from around the region will take to the greens on October 13 to contest the prestigious Cup.
Conceived in 1950, the Diggers Cup acted as one of Tamworth Legacy's major annual fundraisers.
"After WWII, a lot of our returned servicemen and women were keen bowlers," Roese said.
"The day was born out of that passion for bowling and looking to support our returned servicemen and women, something we still look to do today.
"It started in 1950 and quickly became a major event on the local bowls calendar until 1977."
Every winning team has their name engraved on the prestigious trophy, including one of Tamworth City Bowling Club's longest-active members.
"There are some notable local identities in the winning teams and one of interest is Nevell McDonald," Roese said.
"Nev was part of the 1971 team and still bowls regularly today. It's really special to have someone like Nev around to help get it going again."
The trophy is currently on display and will be brought out ahead of the charity bowls day on October 13.
"Entries are now open for anyone keen to have a bowl and help raise some money for Tamworth Legacy," Roese said.
"People can enter as teams of four, or solo, there's lunch provided and people can bowl barefoot as well.
"Entries can be submitted at either the Tamworth Legacy office or at Tamworth City Bowling Club."
