Two rifles were stolen from the footwell of a ute in Gunnedah's CBD overnight, and police are asking for information into the incident.

The vehicle's owner notified police the firearms had been taken some time between 9.30pm Wednesday and 6.30am Thursday.
Officers' initial inquiries have found that someone forced entry to the ute owner's home between the those hours and took the car keys.
The ute was found against a boundary fence on Little Barber Street this morning, with the rifles and several other items missing.

Gunnedah Police Inspector Michael Wurth said they were "undisclosed items at this stage" and were "being forensically examined".
He said police were also looking into whether the firearms had been safely stored.
NSW Police gave a reminder that it was an offence not to secure firearms.
