The region could potentially have two new national record holders after what was a golden opening day to the NSW CHS Athletics Championships for the 140-strong North West team.

Confirmation is still pending, but North West manager Greg Allen reported that Binnaway Central School's Marcus Nolan and Moree Secondary College's Jesse James had with their performances - Nolan in the junior boys multi-class 200m and James the junior boys multi-class long jump - possibly achieved an Australian record for their respective categories.
Nolan's effort in defending his 200m title was certainly a CHS record, he said.
It was Nolan's second gold for the day after also winning the junior boys long jump.

Coonabarabran's Kurt Rutter jumped his way to silver in the 13 years boys high jump, clearing 1.74m while Glen Innes High's Evan Byrne leapt 6.39m to win bronze in the 17 boys long jump.
School-mate Kaleb Hope also picked up bronze in the 14 years boys javelin after launching a personal best 44m with his final throw.
Several other athletes performed well in their heats to qualify for finals later in the championships, which finish on Friday.
"All in all it was a positive finish to the day," Allen said.
He said they probably one of the smallest teams they have taken away for a while.
