Taking on Waratahs on Saturday night, Souths needed a victory of their own as well as two other results to go their way to ensure a finals berth.
A 6-4 loss to Flames last week put Souths in the precarious position, but a good start to Saturday night's clash saw Souths take a 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

Souths coach Hayden Lewin said he was pleased with his side's fast-paced start to the match.
"We had a good talk at the start of the game about how we needed to start," Lewin said.
"Last week against Flames we let them out-enthuse us at the start and we didn't want to make the same mistake.
"It was pleasing to see this taken on board and the energy that we started with was fantastic."
The first-half goal by Lucy Frame was then followed up by a converted short corner from Kaylene Osborne in the second half, which sealed the win for Souths.
"I thought we were fast, strong, enthusiastic and we were able to limit Waratahs' attack," Lewin said.
"Defensively, I thought that Chelsea Thornton in goals had her best game for the season, shutting down a lot of Waratahs' attacking raids.
"Amber Witney was again a threat up front and we transitioned well to find Lucy Frame in a lot of good positions throughout the game."
Lewin said he was proud of his side's desire to win Saturday night's clash.
"When we made mistakes, the effort of all the team to get back and defend was really pleasing," he said.
"Fortunately the results in the other two games went our way and we snuck into fourth spot.
"To make the finals after the start we had to the season was a huge effort and I am proud of the way the team has developed, particularly in the second half of the season."
Souths will now look once again clash with Waratahs in this weekend's minor semi-final.
