A DRIVER has had a lucky escape after hitting a train in the centre of Tamworth on Monday morning.

The car struck the TrainLink Xplorer service, which was en route from Armidale to Sydney, just metres from the Tamworth station platform.
The car failed to stop in time at the level crossing and slammed into the train as it rattled through the crossing about 10.30am.
Police and Ambulance crews were called to Brisbane Street and assessed the driver and checked over everyone on the train.

There were no major injuries reported, police said, but the driver of the car was assessed by paramedics at the scene for minor injuries and did not require further treatment.
The car was removed from the tracks and the train was examined and the scene cleared.
TrainLink NSW said the Armidale to Sydney Xplorer service, via Tamworth, would be delayed.
"The Armidale to Sydney Xplorer service has experienced a delay due to an operational issue near Tamworth," an alert posted online stated.
"NSW TrainLink apologises for any inconvenience."
The crash caused delays for motorists in and around Brisbane Street for almost an hour.
The crash is under investigation.
