Around 500 people attended the Mungindi Rodeo on August 11, which was the biggest crowd the show had attracted in eight years.

The rodeo came as a result of local rodeo enthusiast Darren McMahon, with the help of Miyay Birray Youth Service, obtaining funding from the Public Health Network.

With the show losing a lot of their entertainment this year due to the drought, the Mungindi Show Society said they'd love to have the rodeo come out for the second day.

Centacare also came on board as a partner, with a number of staff on hand for people to talk to, first at Mungindi and again this Sunday in Moree.

"It's more or less to get mental health awareness out there," Mr McMahon said.

"Let people know there's help out there. That's what it's about."

Mr McMahon said he received a lot of positive feedback from the Mungindi rodeo, with plenty of entertainment and bull riding on offer for children as well.

Miyay Birray Youth Service CEO Darrel Smith received a letter of thanks from the Mungindi Show Society, detailing how appreciative they were that they were able to hold the rodeo at the show.

"They said how it's boosted morale in the town," Mr Smith said.

"A lot of people are now talking about their issues and mental health in the town."

The rodeo will now make its way to the Moree Showground this Sunday, August 25, with around 90 riders already confirmed to be competing.

There will be plenty of entertainment for both old and young, with poddy and steer rides available, as well as mini bull and mule rides and barrel racing.

Gates open at the Moree Showground at 11am, with food and bar facilities also available on the day. Gate entry is free and there will also be free raffles up for grabs.
