The Aussies were stunned by China in their opening game going down 3-2.
China came out firing, going up 3-nil after 38 minutes. Quick goals to Savannah Fitzpatrick and Rosie Malone late set up a grandstand finish with the Hockeyroos finishing the stronger. But China managed to hold on.
Backing up less than 24 hours later against India the Hockeyroos had to settle for a 2-all draw.
In contrast to their slow start against China, the Hockeyroos were on the front foot early and went ahead through Kaitlin Nobbs. The Hockeyroos maintained their slender lead going into the second half before India levelled in the third period.
Grace Hamilton put the Hockeyroos back in front.
Then, just as they looked on track for their first win of the competition, Gurjit Kaur struck to salvage a draw.

Jenner and Morgan aren't the only local talent set to don the green and gold with Ehren Hazell named in the Australian under-21s side for what will be a third Sultan of Johor Cup campaign for the Workies' star.
He is one of only four players in the 18-strong squad to have been involved previously in the annual tournament.
The Burras will be attempting to claim the silverware for a third time, having won the tournament in 2016 and 2017. Hazell, who earlier in the year played for the Burras at the 8 Nations Invitational Tournament in Madrid, was part of the 2017 success and last year helped them win bronze.
The tournament will see the six competing nations play in a round robin format culminating in a day of play-offs to determine the final placings.
The Burras depart for Malaysia on October 7 and open their campaign against Japan on October 12.
Meanwhile following the recent Australian Country Championships where the NSW men won gold and the women silver, Tamworth's Katrina Rekunow, Emily Chaffey and Tim Hardy, and New England's Brittany Parker, Brianna Sutton and Ben Hanlan have been selected in the Wattles (womens) and Venom (mens) teams for their forthcoming tours to Borneo and Hong Kong.
Chaffey will head to Borneo with the Wattles under-21s while Rekunow, Parker, Sutton, Hanlan and Hardy are off to Hong Kong with the seniors.
