The vaccine is not currently free because the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee is uncertain about how effective it is in a "population wide program", federal health minister Greg Hunt said on Sunday.
"I urged GlaxoSmithKline to resubmit to the PBAC with any new evidence to address these issues in the hope of funding a vaccine against this awful disease," Mr Hunt said.
The pharmaceutical company had submitted new information to the committee for it to be considered at its next meeting in November.
If it is recommended, the vaccine would be moved onto the national scheme "as a priority," the minister said.
It comes after a 20-month-old toddler from Tamworth in NSW died after contracting the virus.
