Obviously there are some jobs that could be considered more dangerous than others, but I'd wager if you're working in an industry where all you do is help people, that's not something you'd factor into your day.
I am of course referring to hospital workers.
I don't care who they are or what they do in the health system, they are there to help.
And they certainly don't deserve to be abused or attacked on the job.
I was at the hospital during the week. It was about 8pm when I arrived and staff were busy dealing with the sick and injured. I sat down to wait when a young lad came in. He was obviously agitated and raised his voice to staff on more than one occasion. When I left the situation was calm, but I felt sorry for the people behind the counter, the first port of call, just doing their job.
I have no doubt this was a very minor encounter - and the disclaimer here is that I have no idea what occurred after I left - but I left with a very clear understanding of how things could very easily escalate to the point where action by security staff is warranted.
And I understand the concern of hospital staff who walked off the job this week, in support of better security for hospital workers.
If that's what it takes to bring attention to the situation, they have my support.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
