With traditional sources of drought-time animal nutrition having become very difficult to find, expensive, or both, livestock producers are turning to less "standard" avenues.

That's one reason North West Local Land Services (LLS) is inviting them to join in a series of information and networking sessions.
To be held in Warialda, Barraba and Bingara, they will be a chance to talk about challenges and successes, LLS livestock officer Sally Balmain said.
The three towns had been chosen for attention because "they seem to be the part of our area doing it particularly tough at the moment".

"They've really missed out on the last few rainfall events, 'exciting' as they were, so we decided maybe that patch could use a little bit of extra support at the moment," Miss Balmain said.
"Obviously Walgett and parts of our western area have done it tougher for longer, but those guys are pretty apt at feeding livestock because they're been doing it for so long."
All interested producers are invited to join Miss Balmain and LLS district vet Ted Irwin for informal talks on feeding and managing livestock in the current drought conditions.
Northern NSW beef consultant, Bill Hoffman, told Australian Community Media this week there was "no easy answer to what feeding option is best, or what stock you should feed".
Miss Balmain said it was difficult for advisory bodies to give generalised advice right now.
"A lot of the standard literature is based on grain and hay - and hay, in particular, is so hard to get now and has got quite price premium," she said.
"We'll talk about other sources of roughage; some of the implications of some of those feeds we only use in a drought situation."
Miss Balmain said the LLS was also happy to provide one-on-one help to livestock producers who called their nearest LLS office.
RSVPs would be welcomed on 6729 1528. The sessions will be held 5-7pm at:
- Thursday, August 5 - Royal Hotel, Warialda
- Saturday, August 7 - Barraba Bowling Club
- Sunday, August 8 - Imperial Hotel, Bingara
