New data also shows the median income per job in 2016/17 was $43,189, adjusted to take into account how long workers spent in each role.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows young people are working in multiple industries in order to make their money.

"Around one in every four employed people under 30 were multiple job holders in 2016/17, and this was highest around the age of 19," ABS head of labour statistics Bjorn Jarvis said on Thursday.

Of these multiple job holders, 53.7 per cent were women, and 67.2 per cent lived in capital cities.

"Around 26 per cent of multiple job holders worked all of their jobs in the same industry, which meant that 74 per cent worked across multiple industries," Mr Jarvis said.

The most common combination of industries were health care and administration, health care and education, and retail and hospitality.

Overall, more 2.1 million people held multiple jobs in 2016/17, after numbers ticked below two million in 2012/13 and stayed there for four years.

The Northern Territory had the highest rate of multiple job holders at 19.1 per cent, while South Australia reported the lowest.

Of those two million Australians with multiple jobs, 19.4 per cent of them held three jobs, and eight per cent - 168,000 - held four or more.

The data also revealed which type of businesses employ the most Australians, with large businesses with more than 200 workers employing 7.8 million people.

Small businesses with fewer than 20 workers employed 5.6 million people, while medium-sized businesses had 4.2 million workers.
