On National Tree Day, 16 students, teacher Alyce Nottley and principal Krystal Magann headed down to the river to pitch in.
Under the guidance of Macdonald River Restoration Group coordinator Anne Doak, the kids planted lamandras on Friday.
"[We] enjoyed a sausage sizzle, an information session about the Macdonald River and then they were ready to plant," she said.
"This year we did not plant trees, due to the ongoing drought, so it was decided to plant native grasses, lamandras and pin rushes, along the banks of the river.
"The rushes will be important to the health of the river, encouraging aquatic life and improving the health of the river."

The school students weren't the only ones in the region to get behind a restoration project for National Tree Day, with plenty of volunteers in Tamworth helping with efforts at the Peel River Bank on Sunday.
Headed by Ozfish Northwest and Tamworth Regional Landcare, the group tucked in to morning tea before restoring the riparian area to grow the number of native fish in the river.
