The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has narrowed the project's focus area of investigation down to a 150m to 400m wide stripe of land between the two towns.

The Narromine to Narrabri section will be made up of about 300km of new track and is the longest section of the project.

Due to the number of landowners and the distances involved, ARTC said it would inform the community in a staged approach. It is anticipated that this work will take several months to complete.

Landowners will be contacted directly, however ARTC will hold community information sessions across the alignment to discuss what its decisions mean to nearby community.

"Inland Rail will now complete further engineering design and environmental investigations to determine where in the focused area of investigation the 40 to 60-metre wide rail corridor will go," an ARTC spokesperson said.

"The exact location of the final rail corridor is yet to be determined."
