James Douglas Kessell faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted of possessing three or more firearms, including one that is prohibited.

The 51-year-old, who police claim was wanted on a warrant when he was arrested on Tuesday morning, appeared in Boggabilla Local Court on Wednesday facing 27 charges.

The charges stem from a police raid on a Vera Leap Road property in Wee Waa on June 25 where police found six firearms, two prohibited weapons along with what they allege is a quantity of cannabis.

Kessell also faces charges of using or supplying a stolen firearm or part, possessing unregistered and unauthorised guns, acquiring firearm or part without authority, handling explosives and possessing suspected stolen goods.

He was not required to enter pleas and made no bid for bail.

Magistrate Michael Daikin ordered him into the custody of Corrective Services, where he will remain until the case returns to court in late-August.

Police have been ordered to compile a brief of evidence into the guns seizure.

Oxley Detective Acting Inspector Jason Darcy said the raid was the result of community information.

"This search warrant and subsequent arrest shows that police will act quickly with any information in relation to firearms or drugs," he said.

"This is a significant arrest for the Wee Waa area and local police are committed to targeting those people engaged in this type of activity and disrupting the supply or prohibited drugs.

"Police are appealing for anyone in the Narrabri and Wee Waa area who has information on this type of illegal activity to come forward."
